The trifecta conviction of former police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd in 2020 feels like a cause for celebration, as it is long awaited proof of accountability. However, we are deeply saddend and angered by the fact that we feel like celebrating this as a victory when the violence committed on George Floyd was so brutal, unnecessary, and inhumane. NOMA Colorado’s executive committee met last night and wants to express to the NOMA Colorado family our gratitude to the jury in the trial for doing the right thing — the only right step towards true accountability. We stand in solidarity with the statement issued by the NOMA National leadership issued yesterday.
